Glossary

Spectrum

Certain medical cannabis products, particularly those containing cannabis extracts, are often classified based on their cannabinoid profile. These categories - full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate - help guide patients and prescribers.

What is full-spectrum medical cannabis?

Full-spectrum products contain the full range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids from the source plant and are considered to be more effective (for most patients) than isolated cannabinoids such as CBD or THC alone.

This is due to the "entourage effect," a widely accepted theory that states that the therapeutically available compounds found in cannabis work together synergistically to enhance their overall therapeutic effects.

What does broad-spectrum mean in cannabis products?

Broad-spectrum products contain a wide range of cannabinoids and terpenes, but with the THC removed.

This makes them a good option for those who want to experience the benefits of multiple compounds without the psychoactive effects of THC.

What is a cannabis isolate?

Isolate products contain only a single cannabinoid, such as pure CBD or THC, with no other compounds.

Why are these classifications important?

They help patients and prescribers choose the best option based on individual needs and desired therapeutic outcomes. Some health conditions will benefit from specific cannabinoids or combinations of compounds, while others may require a more comprehensive approach.
