In those countries, the term “dispensary” usually refers to a walk-in shop, open to the public (sometimes with a few restrictions), with shelves lined with products and a budtender on hand to guide you through your options.

That’s not how it works here.

In the UK, medical cannabis is extremely strictly regulated. It can only be prescribed by a specialist doctor (who is listed on the GMC specialist registry) and must be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy that meets specific standards for controlled drug storage, processing, and supply. 

There are no walk-in dispensaries, and there’s no over-the-counter access, even for private patients.

Why can’t I fill my UK medical cannabis prescription at a normal pharmacy?

Most high-street pharmacies aren’t licensed to handle Schedule 2 medications like medical cannabis. These prescriptions require specialist storage, controlled drug protocols, and additional record-keeping, which are systems that most community chemists simply don’t have in place.

Why your cannabis medication isn’t dispatched instantly when you pay for your prescription

If you’ve ordered prescriptions online before, you might expect your medical cannabis to arrive just as quickly. But because it’s classified as a Schedule 2 controlled drug, there are extra steps involved, and those steps are built into the UK’s legal framework, not set by individual clinics.

One of the biggest surprises for new patients is that the pharmacy can’t begin processing your medication until it receives a physical, printed copy of the prescription. 

And once the physical copy of your prescription arrives, it doesn't just get instantly dispensed. What can feel like a delay (and let’s not beat around the bush - these do cause delays from time to time) is just the system working exactly as it has been designed to - and the more that all clinics and pharmacies comply with these regulations, the better it is for the industry and patients as a whole. 

What makes medical cannabis pharmacies different?

By now, it should be crystal clear that dispensing medical cannabis in the UK isn’t a quick or casual process, and that’s because the pharmacies involved aren’t ordinary either.

Unlike regular chemists, specialist cannabis pharmacies must meet far stricter regulatory standards. They operate under a series of Home Office and MHRA licences, including a Controlled Drugs Licence, a Specials Manufacturing Licence, and various import and export authorisations.

What’s the difference between a dispensary and a pharmacy?

In the UK, “pharmacy” is the correct legal term, with “chemist” often being used in day-to-day life. It refers to a licensed facility that dispenses medication under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. “Dispensary” is often used informally (especially online or in media from other countries), but there’s no separate system. All cannabis prescriptions in the UK are filled by licensed pharmacies that meet strict regulatory standards.

Why does the pharmacy need a physical copy of my UK medical cannabis prescription?

This isn’t a Releaf-specific rule. It’s industry-wide.

Under UK law, before Schedule 2 prescriptions are dispensed by a pharmacy, they need to hold a ‘hard copy’ of the paper prescription. It’s a requirement designed to reduce any risk of fraud, ensure accurate record-keeping, and maintain full accountability. Digital systems alone aren’t permitted for Schedule 2 dispensing. 

Can I choose my own pharmacy to send my medical cannabis script to?

Why does my medication sometimes take longer than the 2 to 4 working day delivery window?

The most common is staffing, both at Releaf and our partner pharmacy. Fewer staff members work on the weekends, and this is especially true during bank holidays or busy seasonal periods. If you need your meds fast, it’s best to order earlier in the week. 

There are sometimes (very rarely, but worth mentioning) unavoidable delays related to prescription processing, stock availability, or delivery partner issues. While we do everything we can to keep things within the 2 to 4 working day window, these factors occasionally slow things down.
