HHC: Hexahydrocannabinol

HHC, or Hexahydrocannabinol, is an isomer of THC that is manufactured synthetically in laboratories using hemp sourced cannabinoids.

Hexahydrocannabinol is a psychoactive substance that has a similar effect in humans as the cannabis compound THC. Because HHC is made using phytocannabinoids like CBD, it is classed as a semi-synthetic cannabinoid (SSC) and was the first SSC to be officially recognised in Europe in 2022. HCC was synthesised for the first time in 1947 using THC, however, in the modern day, CBD is typically preferred. Clinical investigation into the effects HHC can have on the body is relatively recent and so, research is limited.

Is HHC legal in the UK?

As HHC is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid, its legal status is similar to other synthetic cannabinoids such as Spice or K2. In the UK, it falls under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 and is considered a controlled substance.

The possession, production, and supply of HHC without a licence or prescription is illegal.

Do cannabis-based medicines contain HHC?

They may contain naturally produced HHC, but in only very small amounts. HHC is not commonly found in cannabis plants and is typically only present as a trace compound.
